Artist Statement

Since the 2012 solo exhibition at IT Park, I begin to create numerous image works. Through the change of time and the interaction of objects in the image to perform the time and life they shared. Even thought it stands alone in reality, it represents my query and imagination over essence. There were differences compared to my installation art from early stages. Yet in fact, creating a series of image is more likely and precisely to transforming the original objects into images. Then I started to float between image, installation, and object, trying to perform their relationships in different ways.

This exhibition will perform a series of images and installation arts developed during my Artist-in-Residency period in Glenfiddich distillery, Scotland. Through experiencing local life and knowing the new culture, I create to expand my imagination over history, life, and courage.

At the first moment I arrived Aberdeen, Scotland, it welcomed me with an accident that my luggages were still lying in Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, and Andy’s(the one who arranged everything)hello hug.

Andy and I talked all the way. When we passed by some huge generating windmills, he mentioned that was the first surprise for Chen Hui-Chiao as she first visited Scotland. Suddenly the 11 years of imagination connected in my heart. The Glenfiddich Artist-in-Residency program holds annually. Each year, artists from different fields went to make sparkles with Scotch culture, life in the distillery, and Andy. I felt so touched deep inside when thinking of the works they have developed.

Few days before I landed, there was an unusual big snow in Scotland. The half-melted snow scene could still be clearly seen, and the houses and forests were hidden in the snow. While I was immersing in the amazing view, I glanced at a deer killed by a car crash. It lied silently beside the bushes along the road. That scene still attacks me hard whenever I think of it. Since then, I often saw some half-rotten bodies of creatures like seagulls and crows. The begin, transfer, and the end of life has kept reminding us directly in our daily live. It is rather cruel but natural.

The Glenfiddich distillery falls at the northern highland of Scotland, Dufftown. During the three months of Artistin-Residency period, every artist owned a house as their studio. We spent our weekends in different houses to dine together. We talked about our hometown, shared our working process, or told ghost stories. At the end of May, many towns in Scotland would hold weekly proms called “Ceilidh”. It is the traditional social gather-up. Beside various of music and dance, audiences would be invited to join. That was an important activity to increase community relations. We would gather each other to join when we were free. We bought some raffle tickets hoping to win big prize. Although we got nothing instead, we would still go to a nearby bar for a cup of whisky, throwing the darts, and play pool. That is how we happily end the day. Before the Artist-in-Residency ended, I came to every house for photos of artists working. Not only practicing skills of communicating and filming, also for remembering this residency.

During the residency period, I have three video works. Besides continuing the experiment on the image, I recorded a short film, “Tough Town”, based on the distillery, highland forests, and Scotch dance. I invited students from a local dance school to join the film. These 4-12 year-old little dancers danced passionately, which formed a strong contrast to the huge and cold distillery area. It also showed the undefeatable spirit of Scotland. I still remember the times. Three months was not too long, and I had briefly introduced to the Scotch culture. I would say the humbleness human needs to face nature and our tiny selves, were the parts worth sharing in this Artist-in-Residency journey.
