Take a picture, it lasts longer
中文
text by Lulu Shur-tzy Hou

Prelude
In America, when women feel someone is looking at them profanely, they will say to the person: “Take a picture, it lasts longer.” It is meant to embarrass the viewer, also to snap the activity of visual violation.

The ways in which men look at and depict woman reflect the polarization of the power structure of visual politics since the ancient time. In the internalization of exploring the female/self imagery, I have used my own body as a subject, inviting visual curiosity with male- established patterns, in order to deliver unexpected and unwanted visual rewards, expressive of my own feminist thinking. The eight series of “Peek a boo” photographs intend to blur the boundaries of propriety and social strictures imposed on art, on woman as a whole.
