Dawn? Dusk? —Video Installation of Jenny Chen

text by Jenny Chen

Virtuality and reality are actually the double aspect of matter. If one observes the same event from a different point of view, the result one gets will also be different. Due to the fact that you are in your own shoes to look at things, there is nothing absolutely true or untrue, right or wrong; it all depends on individual viewpoint. For example, in front of the scene of the event so shocking as 911, unexpectedly, one cannot accept the reality. On the other hand, watching the similar virtual phenomenon in the movie makes one almost take it as the reality.

In fact, how could it be an exception in our real world? When there are people following the law of nature, that is, starting work at daybreak and retiring at sunset, there are others whose daytime is the others’ nighttime starting work at sunset and retiring at daybreak. It seems that day and night in their life are upside down in terms of physical space; however, in their mental space, they live with regularity which has the same law of starting work at daybreak and retiring at sunset. Therefore, sunrise at dawn could be sunset at dusk. And, it is not proper to say that someone lives a life in reverse order of day and night.

We are now in the digital age. There is nothing impossible in the virtual world where one can make dreams come true; moreover, in the real world, it also inspires more people having the courage to realize their ideals which used to be considered as something that is impossible to be accomplished and can only be wished.
