Personal statement

1. Bubbles:
Man is often restricted by the “Dos” and “ Do not” posed by social rules. For instance, women are expected to be like “Barbie doll” in all aspects such as beautiful figure and well dress. However, not everybody wants to obey these rules. My interest is to explore the contradiction. I want to show how relationships or affection exist beyond sexual differences through the physical ambiguity of androgynous forms.

My inspiration comes from a reflection on society and my surroundings from the sexually ambiguous nature of the relationship. In addition to this, I try to find some proves from nature, because I believe that androgeny is one of the most original form of life. I have chosen a form of amoeba, which is a hermaphrodite. I have used a bubble outline, which is close to the shape of an amoeba. I have also used the baby-like repeating figures inside the bubbles. These figures have no obvious sexual orientation.

2. The tube:
Loneliness often arises due to inability to make social contact with others or the lack of self- recognition. Under this situation, people try to seek their partners in order to make themselves complete. The pursue of perfect archetypes often transcends gender. I am often attracted by female beauty, both spiritually and physically. To be more precise, it is the highest appreciation of the other individual, whose personality, appearance and behaviour reach the perfection. When the partner accompanies me, I can feel the passion and bravery inside myself.

In this series, I would like to explore the conflict between public and private lives. One has more chance of coming into contact with strangers in public places. Under this circumstance, one tends to have a more critical view on others behaviour, anything outside of one’s own standards will be considered weird. However, it is only one’s prejudices. In my imaginary space, I am free to commit transgressive acts: by posing naked in the tube, hugging and kissing my partner.

3.人造花園:

在社會機制的運作下和傳統價值的主觀認定下,人們看待彼此、空間甚至是世界,或多或少都的存在著一定程度的制式標準,例如:人類的身體自古以來就被賦予一些特定的社會功能和意義,就男性的身體而言,健壯而緊實的肌肉美自希臘羅馬時期以來一直被廣為歌頌,雖然也有如日本相撲力士的〝另類〞審美標準,但就宏觀的審美角度而言實屬少數,相較於男性的身體,女性的身體在不同的時代下都有著更嚴格的審視標準,它幾乎已成為一個女性個體被認識時的第一印象,更有甚者,傳播媒體更以大量的廣告宣傳著女性美的理想標準,使的大眾對人體美的認知更加單一化。

相對於人類的自我認知標準,在取擷及圖利自身之餘,對於生活在都市裡的人而言,長期的與自然隔絕,但是對自然的原始渴望和需求卻仍無法抑止,面對無從改變的現實和生活空間,如何在周遭的環境內發掘一絲零星的光點,似乎成為一種自我救贖的方式。

作品的拍攝地點在一次陪朋友找房子時發現的某公寓中的人造花店倉庫,公寓坐落於台北縣某處擁擠的街道上,四周包圍著如檳榔攤、洗車廠之類的建築,和店內柔和的燈光與瑰麗的花朵行成強烈的對比,希望能從作品中傳達一種帶有溫度的感受,就如同我第一次看到那個倉庫一般,藉由影像合成所建構出來的虛擬/真實世界,輔以〝純粹〞的概念──純粹的感知、生命元素和置身於非自然空間的自得,如同新生兒睜開雙眼對所看到的事物驚喜。

作品中,企圖以不同的角度來重新看待〝身體〞,屏除性別,慾念和機能,由生命最初的原型來重新定義身體,有別於傳統認知下的身體,以嬰兒般的人體造形來重塑我心中的人體美典型。

作品畫面迷漫著一種似幻似真的奇妙氛圍,一個去除性別特徵的人體置身於色彩繽紛絢爛的花叢間,若有所思抑或是表情呆滯的被滿室飛舞的彩蝶包圍,僵硬的身軀既使圍繞著似錦繁花也無法擺脫出自我安慰的無奈感,反映出我當下的心境及情緒,遙望未來仍是無限的期待徬徨,以不同的角度看待生命與空間,似乎就成為自怨自憐和憤世嫉俗之外的另一條出路。
