text by Ava Pao-shia Hsueh

If we look back on the history of abstract art, we can compare it to a systemized information network or a complex orderly substance (referring to the history that abstract art itself has created). Therefore, we can reflect on the dynamism triggered by such information to reflect on the systems or contexts within pre-constructed components for our understanding of contemporary abstract art.

Information, while being a carrier of structural meaning, is also able to work on the human senses; it can reflect the contrasts present in our current reality. According to information theory, information has to do with the movement and state of things. In other words, the amount of information any event generates has to do with the probability of the event’s occurrence. For me, the creative process has the quality of becoming an event. The probability of an event occurring is small and the rate of repetition is also very low, but, in contrast, this may increase the amount of information generated from any one event. The abstract symbols within my works can be regarded as discrete information, but also as continuous information.

I am concerned about how abstract symbols can inspire awareness through their suspension. Can this suspension become meaningful and conjure up attractive relationships amongst the world, the self, and the other? Can we perceive information as consciousness and perception, a medium for communications and connections with the real world? I think the biggest difference between contemporary abstract art and that of the past is the connection between the information and history of abstract art. At the same time it serves as a connection with various real-world information to expand the awareness of abstract art. That is why I am concerned with using various abstract vocabularies to present today’s hybrid reality. I also hope to use the abstract symbols in my works to connect and extend the central ideas between the works to create a place where consciousness and perception interact.

Some of the works displayed in this exhibition are elaborations of my earlier works, nine free hand-painted dots. The difference is that the nine dots are painted in three different colors to represent a continuous space perception within the work. Other works in the exhibition have removed the circles by using more intense lines to create a micro-dynamic world. For me, the creative process is the process of decoding and encoding the variety of factors created through the act of transmitting information. It is my hope to be able to discuss how to use abstract symbols to describe the relationship between messages and information and use this to interpret the hybrid reality of today through these abstract works.
