Artist Statement

“Whatever godlike powers and principalities lurked beyond the stars, Poole reminded himself, for ordinary humans only two things were important: Love and Death.”(from Arthur C. Clarke, 3001: The Final Odyssey )

The Microbiology Association series was started by artist Jun-jieh Wang in 2000 to explore the relationship between mankind and civilization through a virtual research project to save the world from destruction. He completed the Clothing Project (2000), Condition Project I (2000), Hotel Project (Bibless) (2001), Golden Fleece Project (2002) and Condition Project II (2005). “The Final: Cullinan+”, the last project of the series, consists of future mankind's archaeological records of the discoveries of the first batch of earth migrants to outer space in 3002.

Dr Z, founder of the Microbiology Association, eventually failed to accomplish his mission to prevent the destruction of earth, caused by the complete depletion of the ozone layer. In 2550, man discovered the outer planet Cullinan+ at the edge of the solar system that showed signs of life. Thus, migration to Cullinan+ became the only solution to mankind's salvation. The journey from earth to Cullinan+ took four and half years to complete. On December 24, 2997 A.D. , the first batch of space migrants set off on the super spaceship Argo Type V and arrived at the destination on July 1, 3002. This first group of immigrants used texts, paintings and video images to record the tough process of their struggle to survive.

“The Final: Cullinan+” exhibition presents the archaeological records of future mankind observing man's migration to outer space. They show that while human civilization has advanced to an unprecedented degree by 3000 A.D., man still cannot avert the earth's destruction. With great bitterness, people are forced to abandon their advanced civilization and struggle like primitive man on another desolate planet...The parable-like “Final: Cullinan+” is presented in the form of a museum exhibition of historical records. Through various symbolic objects and documents, it turns man's dreams about adventures in outer space and longing for other signs of life into another story of disillusionment in the course of civilization. Everything is back to zero, just like the mass extinction that once occurred on earth.
