Through a careful selection of classic character in fairy tales, this exhibition unfolds stories taking place in the midnight. By adapting those midnight scenes from fairy tales, such as Sleeping Beauty, Grandaunt Tiger, Barbe Bleue, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk and The Little Match Girl, it allows an imaginary journey of wonders to set sail. Shapiro, the leading character of this exhibition, is always here and there, seen in each individual scene, like a phantom and an enigma.

Developed from a previous idea on the malfunction of fairy tale, this exhibition enters into the zone of ‘glitch’ by creating a messed-up space-time, condensing the depth of stories, withdrawing the meaningful symbols, vacuuming the emotion, and bewildering the representative function in images. Through this, it allows a certain kind of intervention on the audience’s ways of seeing, while story plots are no longer predictable, the story begins to grow freely as only for its own. Without a starting point nor an end, it is at the same time a closure cycle and a infinite returning. This solo show therefore, frame-worked by fairy tales, has generated overlapping dialogues on multiple layers— between paintings, between stories, and finally between art works.

In this show, the installation of kaleidoscope is developed from a constant awareness towards creating process. The idea of ‘unlimited imagination’ has long been a center concern in my practices; for examples, to apply the concept of ‘Möbius band’ for my very first solo show and to title the second with the idea on ‘transforming life’. To choose kaleidoscope as a visual expression is for a sort of spatio-temporal fragmented pattern and for the infinite loop on imagination. As to the characters in the painting, they are all thrown into the kaleidoscope in this exhibition with the concern to disintegrate the way of seeing them, with its potential. As to the viewers, they would not perceive nor share exact same image with others; and by which this exhibition invites the viewer to embark on one’s own journey in a surreal phenomena and the imaginary reality.
